Sixteen auctioneers from across the United States gathered last week in Auburn, Ind., to discuss the auction profession and brainstorm strategies to build on the future.

Michael Hoffman, Auctioneer of Pickerington, Ohio was among a select group invited to attend the first ever “Think Tank” session sponsored by the National Auctioneers Association (NAA). Attendees were the “cream of the crop” from across the United States and Canada, including 2 past presidents of NAA (Rob Doyle & John Roebuck), the current president (Dennis Kruse), the president-elect (Bill Sheridan), and the vice president (Tommy Williams).

“Our goal in conducting this Think Tank session was to garner information from some of our professionals to help pave a bright future for the next generation of auctioneers,” said Dennis Kruse, CAI, NAA president, who planned and coordinated the event.

“It was a distinct pleasure and honor to be selected to participate in such a ground breaking event. The wealth of knowledge shared in our sessions, such as real estate auction techniques and technology usage, will hopefully help blaze a trail for future auctioneers to follow as a guide to having more successful auctions and promoting a positive image of our profession,” said Michael Hoffman, Auctioneer.

One of the topics explored by the Think Tank group was “If NAA was to develop and host an ‘Innovation Center,’ what should be considered and what would it look like?” Other topics included real estate auctions, benefit auctions, and live Internet auctions – all of which are growing segments in the auction industry.

Results of the meeting will be shared with the NAA Board of Directors and with NAA committees for future input and work.

Auctions are one of the most historic and popular forms of buying and selling goods, and the industry continues to grow each year. An ongoing research study overseen by the NAA shows that gross revenues during the first three quarters of 2005 increased 4.75 percent from the same period in 2004. If this trend continues, the auction industry will contribute nearly $ 227.5 billion to the 2005 economy.

This study has also found that auctioneers are finding even more opportunities in real estate. Gross revenue from residential real estate auctions grew 8.2 percent compared to the same time last year. The value of all residential real estate sold at auction in 2005 is estimated at $ 13.1 billion. While revenue from commercial and industrial real estate auctions and vacant land and agricultural real estate auctions remained largely unchanged, real estate auctions remain on pace to top $ 48 billion in gross revenue for 2005.

Sixth Engine Food and Bar Interiors by Streetsense

The long-anticipated Sixth Engine restaurant, now open at 438 Massachusetts Ave., N.W. in the Mount Vernon Triangle neighborhood of Washington, D.C., features a unique design by Streetsense of Bethesda, MD.

A new American bistro operated by veterans of popular D.C. restaurants The Dubliner and Town Hall, Sixth Engine is located in the city’s oldest firehouse. Built in 1855 for the Metropolitan Hook and Ladder Company and still displaying the original “MHL” insignia, this two-story brick structure was acquired by Douglas Development in 2005. It was preserved as a historic element within a block of newly developed upscale residential buildings.

About a year ago, Douglas turned the space over to a partnership of Gavin Coleman, Jeremy Carman, Paul Holder, Paul Madrid, and Tim Walsh. Coleman runs the Dubliner, the Irish pub opened by his father in 1974; the others have operated Town Hall in Glover Park since 2005. BuilderGuru Contracting, Inc., the general contractor for the redevelopment, hired Streetsense to design a 3,900 square foot restaurant space that showcases and preserves the building’s history. Streetsense designed the base building renovation and collaborated with Jenkins Baer Associates of Baltimore, MD on the interior design.

“This building presented us with a wonderful opportunity to create a one-of-a-kind restaurant environment, though not without its share of challenges, as the property inherently contained obstacles relating to code compliance and operational efficiency,” said Kathryn Bram, Director of Projects, Streetsense. “The firehouse is surrounded by the new 400 Mass condo development, but has its own walls and structure. We had to solve numerous issues in regard to egress, deliveries, life safety, structural integrity, venting, and more.”

The historic building’s structure had to be strengthened to accommodate new loads on the second floor and roof, Bram explained, thus delaying its opening – but diners are sure to think the results worth the wait. “From the moment you approach, you are reminded of the building’s historic past,” she said. “The exterior retains many of the firehouse’s original elements.”

The restaurant’s entry floor features a front bar and rear dining; the second floor houses the kitchen and a private dining room, with exposed roof trusses evoking the original structure and views through the historic front windows. A patio for outdoor dining is scheduled to be developed later in the year.

Aside from the obvious healthcare costs, what are the other costs associated with toxic Chinese drywall?

The Chinese Drywall Complaint Center says, “How do effected communities like Fort Myers, or Cape Coral, Florida, the North Shore of New Orleans, Conroe, Texas or other communities throughout Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Southeast Texas, or Virginia ever recover, from the toxic Chinese drywall disaster, if it is never addressed by the federal government? In many to most cases we have observed, most homeowners simply walk away from their toxic Chinese drywall, home, or condominium, it becomes a foreclosure, the bank, or Fannie Mae, then simply resell the home AS IS, no disclosure about the toxic Chinese drywall. As soon as the new homeowner becomes aware of the toxic Chinese drywall, the home becomes a foreclosure all over again, or the current homeowner rents the home out to a renter-with no disclosure. Why have a US EPA? After three plus years of knowing about the toxic Chinese drywall disaster the US EPA has yet to come up with a uniform remediation protocol for fixing a toxic Chinese drywall house, and there are no mandatory federal disclosure rules? How is this a win for anyone?”

The Chinese Drywall Complaint Center says, “We guarantee the health effects related to toxic Chinese drywall off gassing hydrogen sulfide are going to be super bad for peoples health, including renters. In the instance of renters, renting Gulf States homes, or condos, and not being told about the toxicity of the rental property, we fear a gigantic liability issue has been created for the landlord, and their homeowners insurance company. Once again, we think down the road, as severe health related issues become better defined with respect to toxic Chinese drywall, the liability to landlords, and their insurance companies, is going to be in the billions, and billions of dollars.”

The Chinese Drywall Complaint Center says, “At some point someone has to take charge of the toxic Chinese drywall disaster, and the sooner the better. We are not going to back down as a passionate advocate for victims of toxic Chinese drywall, it is an election year, and we will take care of our own.
